Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), Milton Erickson, Hypnosis and Influence
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a system for creating personal and organizational change by applying influence in certain specific ways. NLP It can be used by anyone for acquiring influence or for self-improvement. It is commonly used by professional coaches, mentors and psychotherapists. A person, corporation, government, religion, media organization has influence if they can change either directly or indirectly another entity’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. Where there is power, change is precipitated. With human beings, this change will generally take place concerning a belief, an attitude, the possession of physical wealth, and/or the use of influence in its various forms.
There are few things that define the course of our lives more than influence. From the moment we cry as babies, we are influencing our parents. On the other hand most of what we think, speak and do is influenced by others, particularly by government, religion, the media and general peer pressure.
The greater your influence, the greater is your chance of survival in times of scarcity. The greater your influence, the greater is your status in a group What does status bring? In evolutionary terms, you get your choice of mates and/or more mates, and in economic terms you spend less cash to get what you need. This allows you to save for the future. Put simply, the accumulation of influence can get you to places that any other human skill never can and never will. With influence you can get someone to give you what you want without having to pay cash for it. If you must pay anything, you get a discount.
With influence you can determine, shape, give direction to, and affect the people around you as well as the surrounding environment in very measurable ways. You can make things happen without any direct or apparent effort.
One of the greatest pioneers in the study of influence was Milton Hyland Erickson MD, (December 5 1901 – March 25 1980). Erickson was an American psychiatrist specializing in medical hypnosis and family therapy . Both dyslexic and color blind he was largely self-taught and is noted for his approach to the unconscious mind as creative and solution-generating. He is also noted for influencing brief therapy, strategic family therapy, and many other schools of psychotherapy. He overcame his dyslexia and had many other inspirations via a series of spontaneous autohypnotic “flashes of light” or “creative moments”, as described in the paper Autohypnotic Experiences of Milton H. Erickson. According to Erickson many of even his earliest personal experiences were hypnotic or autohypnotic.
A great many of his anecdotal and autobiographical teaching stories are collected by Sidney Rosen in the book My Voice Will Go With You. At age 17, he contracted polio and was so severely paralyzed that the doctors believed he would die. In the critical night when he was at his worst, he had another formative “autohypnotic experience”. Through the pioneering anthropologist, social scientists, linguist, visual anthropologist, semiotician and cyberneticist Gregory Bateson, Erickson met Jay Haley, Richard Bandler and John Grinder., amongst others, and had a profound influence on them all. They went on to write several books about him with Bandler and Grinder creating Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
